TRANSFER STUDENTS

All courses are subject to review by faculty within the discipline of a course. This may delay the posting of your transfer credit. It is crucial that all transcripts are submitted as early as possible so that your credit will be evaluated prior to registration. Elective credit will be awarded as placeholder credit and will remain on your record unless or until an equivalent Vaughn course has been determined.

Students who have received a degree from the City University of New York (CUNY) that satisfies the entirety of the 30-credit CUNY General Education common core** (required and flexible) will receive 27 credits towards a baccalaureate degree at Vaughn College. You will be exempt from the 27-credit, 9 general education competencies. In addition, you will be provided an expedited process to be exempted from enrolling in the 3-credit First Year Initiative (FYI) course. In total, you will not have to retake 30 credits towards your baccalaureate degree. The engineering programs may require additional assessment and courses related to math and physics requirements.

In almost all cases, you will receive either credit or a waiver for Vaughn’s First Year Seminar or First Year Initiatives classes. See the statement referenced below for details.

Students are eligible for a waiver of the FYI 101 and FYE 101 courses in the following cases:

• Students successfully transferred an “Introduction to College” course from another accredited institution of higher education with any number of credits or for no credit. In the case of a non-credit course, the student needs to demonstrate that the course met at least the equivalent seat time of a 1 credit course and was not merely an extra-curricular activity.
• Students have attended another institution and have successfully transferred 24 or more credits from that institution with an incoming GPA of 2.0 or higher. The GPA requirement is to demonstrate that the student has already successfully mastered. A student that has attended more than one prior institution but has not completed 24 credits at any institutions has not demonstrated successful persistence in college and is not eligible for the waiver.

Students are eligible to be awarded credits for FYI and FYE on their transcript in the following cases:

• FYI 101 will be awarded for students who have taken an equivalent 3 credit course that is successfully transferred to Vaughn.
• FYE 101 will be awarded for students who have taken an equivalent 1 or 2 credit course that is successfully transferred to Vaughn.
• Students who take FYE 101 at Vaughn will still be required to take FYI 102 to make up the remainder of the topics. It is understood that FYI 102 is not a first-year course. Students who received a waiver of the course in the first section of this policy do not need to take FYI 102.

In order to receive the waiver or the award of credits, the following conditions need to be met:

• The students need take all training modules required for compliance with education laws. At the time of writing this policy this includes an alcohol safety course and a Title IX awareness course. The certificate should be presented to the College’s transfer credit coordinator before the credits are accepted or the course is waived.
• Waiving FYI 101 or FYE 101 would not cause the student’s degree to fall under the minimum credits required for the associated degree as mandated by state education law.

If this is the case, we could provide a waiver but not an award of credits. If not all of the credits transfer, then we could use a blanket three credits to fill the void.
