Four Vaughn College students along with faculty from the engineering and technology department presented research papers at the ASEE’s 122nd Annual Conference and Exposition in Seattle, Washington that ran from June 14 through June 17.

On Tuesday, June 16 the paper “3D Printer from Scratch Made with E-waste” by William Babikian ’15 and Terry Beesoon ’15 was one of 20 projects presented during a livestream maker event from the Conference, held during the White House National Week of Making. This project presented ideas about building a 3D printer based on recycled electronic components resulting in a much quicker timeframe to completion at a lower cost. The 3D printing technology, seen as the next industrial revolution, has caught wide attention around the world.

Also presented on Tuesday was the technical paper “Developing Courseware for Robotics in Pre-College Engineering Education for High School Students” by Nicholas Kumia ’18 and Jonathan Zubarriain ’18. The presentation states that incorporating robotics into the STEM initiative is an essential part of keeping students relevant and competitive in a global economy, and presents an original way of developing courseware for an introductory robotics course as part of a six-week pre-college, engineering summer program.

A faculty team paper was also presented at the Conference. “Teaching PLC Programming and Industrial Automation in Mechatronics Engineering” by Associate Professors Dr. Shouling He and Khalid Mouaouya along with Engineering and Technology Department Chair Dr. Hossein Rahemi, focused on the importance of providing mechatronic engineering graduates with hands-on PLC programming skills and knowledge to prepare them for future innovations, challenges, and technological advancement.
